Questions you may have while shopping.

How long does it take to build and ship a neighbourhood library?

I’ll have your library built and out within 3 business days.

Do you build custom sizes or designs?

I don’t mind adjusting my libraries to a degree but I find doing full custom builds takes a lot of time and it’s expensive. I am in the process of building a page for custom designs based on your vision where I build the plans so you can build them yourself.

Can I get my library painted before shipping?

Honestly, I’m a pretty good carpenter but my painting skills are equivalent to the average toddler.

How heavy are the libraries?

The smallest one is around 15 pounds. Most are around 25 pounds but combination libraries can get close 100 pounds and are shipped in multiple boxes.

What’s the difference between your library models?

Preference, that’ it!

Can I order as a gift and ship diretly to someone else?

You bet! When filling out your checkout information, use your own address for the billing address and the shipping address of your friend. Easy peasy!

Installation & Setup

What post or mounting system do I need?

You can install it pretty much anywhere you like. I do offer a mounting bracket which makes post mounting a breeze. Simply screw it to bottom of the library, slip it over a 4×4 post, and screw the bracket to the post. (I do send the screws with it too.) If you prefer the standard “Y” configuration, just don’t order the mounting bracket and I’ll send you instructions on how to do that.

If you would like to install it on a wall please get in touch. I have a way to do it but I’ll have a few questions and I’ll be happy to help you out.

How deep should I set the post?

A 5 foot, 4×4 pressure treated post is adequate, buried two feet deep and secured with gravel or concrete.

Do you sell posts separately?

I do, but…..the shipping is astronomically expensive. I recommend going to your local hardware store and just buying a 5 foot post and a mounting bracket.

Weatherproofing & Maintenance

How do I protect my library from rain and snow?

Use a good exterior grade paint. Please DO NOT use stains. They’re created for cedar and pressure treated wood and provide little to no protection for the pine.

How often will I need to repaint it?

That’s hard question to answer. I really depends on what paint you use and the climate. I can tell you that living in Alberta, I haven’t had to repaint the library but I do end up repainting the roof ever 3 or 4 years.

What do I do if the door swells in humid weather?

Generally it’s not a worry with my libraries. I deliberately mount the doors on the face of the library rather than a tight hole the door fits into. By installing it on the face it has plenty of room to expand in all directions without binding.

Ho do I repair cracks or splits?

As time passes sometimes you may see some splits. Not to worry! If the splits are small, a simple fix is to squeeze some exterior glue into them and give it a quick sanding while the glue is still wet. It creates a kind of wood filler.

If the cracks are larger, again, squeeze some exterior glue into the split and use a large clamp to squeeze it closed, leave it overnight, and give it a quick sand. You may need to touch it up with paint.

Community & Law

Do I need permission form my city to install my neighbourhood library?

Yes! Some cities and HOAs require a development permit, others are totally cool with just putting one up. It never hurts to ask beforehand.

How do I get my neighbours involved?

If you’re looking for your neighbours to pitch in a couple of bucks or donate books it’s always fun to create a colourful flyer to drop into their mailbox. Flyers also let them know there’ll be a library installed soon. Better yet, if you have kids, have them create them. Kids are alway super creative with these kinds of things.

International

Do you ship to the US?

You bet I do!

Are there any customs fee for US buyers?

Yes but they will be included in the shipping quote at checkout so I’ll handle them. There are exceptions for some states that won’t let me include state taxes in the shipping cost and it seems to change regularly so keep it in mind that you may get a bill to cover your state taxes even though I’ll cover the custom and duty.

What about UK/Australia/Europe?

I do ship all over this crazy world. At this point in time you’ll have to pay duty and customs when it crosses your border. Sorry! I wish I could do more but I can’t at this time.
